Gerontology studies the aging process. It takes a close look at the social, cultural, and biological aspects of aging.

As a gerontology student at Illinois State, you'll focus on all the issues and problems that come later in life. You'll also look at the aging process throughout a lifespan and see how aging is shaped by many factors, including:

  • Social circumstances
  • Historical and political consequences
  • Culture
  • Organizational effects, such as work history

Why Study Gerontology?

Gerontology at Illinois State gives you a background in theory and practical research. Our courses focus on applied knowledge that helps you in the professional world as you work with an aging population.

Our program is interdisciplinary. This means you'll take classes from several different areas around campus. This gives you an engaging and well-rounded learning experience.

You'll get plenty of hands-on opportunities with our program. All gerontology students get to complete an internship where you can apply what you learn in the classroom to the real world.
