Biography

Maximilian Viatori is a sociocultural anthropologist whose work has examined inequality, politics, and the environment in Ecuador, Canada, and, most recently, Peru. He is the author of three books: One State, Many Nations: Indigenous Rights Struggles in Ecuador (SAR, 2010), Coastal Lives: Nature, Capital, and the Struggle for Artisanal Fisheries in Peru (Arizona, 2019), and The Unequal Ocean: Living with Environmental Change along the Peruvian Coast (Arizona, 2023). He also has published numerous scholarly articles in journals such as American Anthropologist, Anthropological Quarterly, and the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology. His current research focuses on how the ocean is being reimagined and transformed through blue economy initiatives in and beyond Peru.
