The Sociology and Anthropology Department is associated with three Registered Student Organizations: the Sociology Club, Alpha Kappa Delta, and the Society of Student Anthropologists.
The purpose of the Sociology Club is to form a community of students and faculty who show an interest in sociology as well as enhance academic knowledge and apply such knowledge to better the environment.
Sociology students and faculty will unite for a variety of activities including social events, field trips, films, programs on graduate school and careers, discussions about social issues and more. For more information, please contact Dr. Chris Wellin at cwellin@IllinoisState.edu.
In recent years, the Sociology Club has featured a range of activities including faculty research presentations; discussions of current social and policy issues; film presentations and discussions; and co-sponsorship of lectures by speakers from the local community and beyond. The goals and options for Club officers and members are variable and change over time, depending on the preferences of current members. For more information, please see the Sociology Club Facebook Page.
The department is home to a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Alpha Kappa Delta is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. To become a member see the AKD Membership Requirements. For more information, contact Dr. Richard Sullivan at rdsulli@IllinoisState.edu or Dr. Maria Schmeeckle at mhschme@IllinoisState.edu.
Lambda Alpha is the national collegiate honors society for anthropology. The purpose of the society is to encourage and stimulate scholarship and research in anthropology by recognizing and honoring superior achievement in the discipline among students, faculty and other persons engaged in the study of anthropology. For more information, contact Dr. Jim Skibo at jmskibo@IllinoisState.edu.
The Society of Student Anthropologists (SOSA) is open to all students interested in anthropology and dedicated to enhancing the anthropology education at Illinois State University through extracurricular activities such as guest speakers, field trips, and behind-the-scenes tours of local museums.
SOSA also organizes a number of social events including the annual Rites of Passage Initiation Bonfire for new members and co-sponsors and the annual Rites of Passage Dinner Celebration for graduating seniors. For more information, please see the SOSA Facebook Page.
